Dear All

I just wanted to know if anyone else had ever seen this before. I've got 2 african clawed frogs in a tank and I thought it'd be quite cool to add a couple of golden apple snails for algae control. Within 2 days of adding the snails I realised I was the proud owner of 2 hollwed out snail shells and I know for a fact they were in there when I added them. So my question is this do frogs eat snails ????, if so move over clown loaches cos these boys mean business !!!.

I've tried a number of times to add snails to my frog tank, and they usually survive till they are about 1/2 long, and then she rips them out. No clue how--I've never seen it happen, just retrieved the empty shells. Ditto any fish--even armoured, spiky fish get too much abuse to be kept in with her. I will throw a few ghost shrimp in every now and then--they typically evade the frog for 3-4 days. What it comes down to--cleaning it up to us, without any helpers.

This is also one reason why controls on this species is tightening--they can survive and breed in cool waters as well as tropical waters, and they will eat ANYTHING they can catch--really damaging to native species unprepared for the aggression levels.

Ah I'm glad you've noticed the same thing. I do stress though I do all the maintanance on the tanks myself and dont rely on any creature to do a cleaning job for me, its just that some of the orniments had a little green algae on their and I figured it'd be perfect for snails. I had no idea a frog would eat them. My frogs are kept totally seperate from my fish as I was aware they'd eat anything they could fit in their mouths, but I had no idea they had the ability to rip a snail out of its shell.

:) I learned the same way--sure thought it would be nice to have some snails clean up the bits of food my frog manages to scatter in her splash to eat. Sigh--I ended up getting a thin air line to siphon out the little bits of food so they don't foul the tank--or, try keeping ghost shrimp in the tank a few extra days.
