i told my friend about some freshwater puffers i saw, he said he had some he had to kill. he bought 2 to add to a 10 gal frshwtr tank with tetras. the 2 puffers killed ALL the tetras in minutes! so they had to flush them. is this coincidence or does this happen often?

Puffers are predators--research their needs, as not only do most need a species only setup or they will kill tankmates, but many are brackish to marine despite being sold as FW.

It's sad that your friend killed the puffers--not their fault.

Yes this happens often when people don't know the species very well. That's sad that he had that happen. Same EXACT same thing happened to my boyfriend but he didn't flush the guys he made a 10 gal just for them. They still died though because He didn't know what they needed to survive and the LFS never told him that they are predators and enjoy live foods like snails and worms and such.

I joined AC because of all this, I loved the Puffers and didn't want to see them die and well it was too late but HEY we ALL have have learning mistakes in here.

Hope your friend has better luck and it's too bad his fish were victims to puffers, NOT a pretty sight :(

Welcome to the world of puffers, something I am very familiar with! What kind of puffer fish were these???

In truth, these little guys usually don't kill fish to eat them, but are very territorial and aggressive to other fish. Also, certain puffers had different attitudes. One dwarf puffer can be docile, while another can be vicious, etc etc.
