I finished setting up my old 5 gallon tank a few weeks ago and it has been running since without fish. The problem is I cannot decide what type(s) of fish to get for it. This is where you (the reader) need to help me. Im looking for a few fish that have personalities... i'm done with tetras, mollies, platies, etc., all those "minnow-like" fish that don't seem to do much besides take up space.
Things I've considered:
1. Male betta, glass shrimp and maybe a snail.
2. 2-3 female bettas and glass shrimp.
3. 1-2 small electric blue/yellow cichlid and a glass shrimp.
I am really leaning towards the two small cichlids, and yes, I know that they will get big eventually and will require a larger tank. However, would two small (the LFS has a few ~1-1.5 inches) cichlids work for a while? Or possibly one?
Also I am open to suggestions.

Well, if you would like to go with the cichlids, you'd probably want to set up another tank large enough soon after you put them in. That way you could transfer to the large tank before the size of the 5g has an effect on their growth. However, this means that you could only keep them for a very limited time in the 5g. HTH

Well, I will be setting up a new tank as soon as I get out of school (away at college currently). I know that they will grow large soon, but if I get them while they're very small, how long would it take for them to reach a point where they would be needed to be transfered out? And in terms of aggression, how would two of these guys do in such a small setting?

go with the male betta- they have a wide variety of personalities (including some that will eat up shrimp)- choose a color that you like and heavily plant the tank.
bettas are one of the coolest fish you can get (cheeply) also with how badly they are treated at the petstores, you will be doing a good thing for the fish (who otherwise would have died at the store or in a 5-year old's betta bowl)

how the heck do you keep 6 male bettas in a 25gal Betta-Gurl?

i second the idea of a male betta
If I were to get a single male, I would probably go for a Betta Imbellis. Does anyone have experiences with these?
edit: Oh, and I have owned a betta before so it's probably the easiest route for me.
