I have a new 210G that I am getting ready to put water in this week. I am wondering how to go about cycling it. I generally understand the nitrogen cycle I am just wondering how to apply it to this tank. Should I go fishless and use an ammonia to get it going? I also have a 55G that is fully cycled. It has 2 HOB filters with established bio-media. Should I run those filters on the new tank for a while?

i'm no expert, but I say go fishless. Seed your tank with all the media from your cycled tank that you can. A fishless cycle only took me 19 days. I only had a moderate amount of media from an established tank, if you have more than me maybe it won't take as long to cycle. Good luck to you.

I might be wrong, but I would think you could just switch over all, or as much as possible of your existing tank water and all of your filters/media, and gravel and avoid a cycle all together. I'm not sure why it would not be like a large water change.(?).
I'm interested if anyone else agrees, I plan to do almost exactly what I mention above in a couple of weeks, consolidating a 60g and 35g into a 180g.
Let me know how you end up going about it bdobosz, I'd like to know how it works out and if you have any problems!

ooooh... but if you're keeping both :duh: ! I guess my idea doesn't really apply. If its just a new tank, I would do the fishless cycle too, really the best way!

what i would do it set up cheap HOB filter’s in the old tank for about 2 weeks to get them started.
and then when you are ready to cycle (Fishless cycle) the big tank put these HOB on it.
it will help you cycle faster..

2 weeks of cycling beat 4 week of cycling any day
HTH :)

How are you planning on stocking the tank? In 210 gallons, you'll be able to put in a number of smaller fish with some established media immediately, and see barely any detectable spikes. The dilution factor will protect the fish. If you're planning on adding some big lunkers, I'd fishlessly cycle the tank using some seed material from the established tank first, simply because they'll be able to produce enough ammonia to create a spike despite the volume.
