A local fish store I thought was a good one. Isn't as good as I thought. They seemed to have good well kept tanks they seemed to have a general care for fist. But I went in the other day and they were selling Painted fish  they had "fruit tetras" "strawberry tetra's" Its really sad because at first glance the so called fruit tetra's looked natural but the strawberry tetra's screamed fake UUUUGGGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!! GGGRRRRRRRRRRRR :rant2: Then on closer inspection I found they were selling non aquatic plants for the aquarium such as purple waffle and aqua fern (thank you plant geek) I never would have known if I didnt do research on their site. I'm so disapointed  even more sad is that I didnt say anything to them.....I just dont have it in me to get into a argument or confrontation. As much as I wanted to dip them in acid and dye them blue and red. Sigh I will just never go there again. Also if anyone lives in Vancouver BC dont go to pet boutique. Shame on them.

I agree and disagree to this one,
I disagree to the plants not for aquarium being pasded as such, BUT, allot of LFSs don;t know any better and sell what they are sold n told.
I do agree on the selling of painted fish because I know "from talking to several LFSs one being friends of mine that had one"
It's very hard for them to make the bills, so You gotta stock what sells, if people want painted fish, then stock it, people are always going to be against and for things like this but you have to stop and think of the returning customers who want it, if you don;t have it they go where they do, you lose money,
Owning a buisness such as a LFS has no rule book for trying to make a living at it and you gotta sell what sells, simple as that.

You make some points mraq.....buuuuut most stored don't even tell you they are painted only someone who actually does research would know and lets face it theres only a small percentage that do(ignorance is a whole other argument) all I am saying it would be nice if they were labeled "painted fish" and not so dishonest and labeled "Strawberry or fruit" if people were given the information instead of being dooped into it. Another thing is that there are sooo many other options then painted fish.....for alot more money. I really dont think they would lose their shirts if they decided not to sell them personally I dont find them attractive really even trying to be objective. Most of the ones I see are 3 bucks a fish the profit margin cant be that high. I just dont get it. I know that plants are hard to ID but come on the person with a pet store should REALLY do their own research and make the effort to be informed. Thje more informed and knowlegable a employee is the more I'm inclined to buy from them again if you cant make profit from fish keeping ...then quit selling fish let someone else do it....if your gonna halfarse it then dont bother doing it. period.

I don't think we'd have very many fish stores if people listened to you. Oh, how I wish that weren't true...

Again, it ends up being financial versus moral.
Most businesses are around to make money, period.

I’ll have to agree to disagree on this type of issue as well.

My LFS sells the occasional painted fish or blood parrot and I’ve flat out told him I don’t like that they are sold, but at the same time I know that when someone comes in and asks him if they can buy some Ammo Lock because they’ve got ammonia in their tank or want to lower their pH and want some pH down he doesn’t sell it to them. He tells them they need to address the source of their problem and not the problem itself.

You take the good with the bad in anything and also have to understand that a business is still a business. If you took the high ground on every issue you most likely wont last.

And with that said, a Petco just opened up here and because of them and places like BigAl’s he told me today that he’ll be closing up shop somewhere in the next 6 months. Pretty sad really, wish I could help him out.

There is a great LFS in a town a few miles from me. He gets good stock and takes care of it. I try to make all my fish purchases there. It's farther than the 2 chain stores and the crappy lfs in the town where I live, but worth the drive. I was there last friday and the place was packed. Met one of my neighbors there, and it was someone else near me that told me about the place, so the really good places do have a following.
That being said..I believe I saw blood parrots last time I was there. No painted fish tho. Come to think of it, I've not seen those around here for some time.
