Last week I bought a few potted plants and they came with pond snails. As I see them I have been picking them out of the tank. Got 11 so far. Anyhow, of course the kids are more amused with the snails than the fish. I have been throwing them in a 1/2 g betta bowl (no betta) and I put a piece of algea wafer in there. Can they live this way or will they die? Doesn't matter to me either way. If they will live this way should I be doing water changes very often and how big do pond snails grow?

Snails are tough--as long as the water doesn't get too cold, they will live that way just fine. I wouldn't worry much about water changes, just when it starts looking bad. If you have low KH, they may benefit from supplements. If you start seeing white lines along the edges, add a bit of crushed coral or cuttleshell.

I like to keep some snails in my planted tanks, better diversity and something different to look at. But yeah, they can do fine in pretty much any setup. My small snail tank just gets top off water to make up for evaporation and the population does very well with weekly feedings and some live plants. I added some shell for their shells. They will probably only get to be about the size of a large pencil eraser or so.
