which should i get. im getting a 30 gallon tank over the summer and don't know if i should plant it, or get silver dollars. can't get both because they eat plants. what would u suggest silver dollars or a planted tank. your opinion would be greatly appreciated

I would suggest the plants as the silver dollars will be on the large side for keeping in a 30 gallon, IMO.

Totally agree with TKOS--a 30 isn't nearly big enough for silver dollars.

SD's are big fish so agree totally with overstocking comments above and would suggest planted.
go for some nice low lights such as vallisineria, java moss / fern, annubias etc and stear well clear of Cabomba! I weekly have to pick it's "gunk" out of my filter media and I was mis-sold it as a beginners plant.

Silver dollars can be nice fish, I have some and they're a little nippy and they chew up my plants (although they have yet to kill any of them), but they are attractive. If you really want to have silver dollars and could move them to a bigger tank as they grow then it could be worth it. But if the 30 gal would be the permanent home then you should definately go with the planted.
