Can wisteria be grown floating?

I float wisteria in my tank for my betas, they love it. I thought many times that they were dead because they would be right in the thickest parts of the wisteria right at the surface of the water. I find it doesn't really grow all that great, (but could be because it so close to the lights), but doesn't die either.
My gouramis liked it when it would block any surface agitation, one staked the the corner out and made a nest. Wisteria can also be used as ground cover (under hight light) if you keep it held down with rocks or something until it takes root. I find it usually does a little better under high light and is great for eating up nutrients for algae control.

My betta has started doing the same thing in mine!!! I planted it, and luckily didn't kill it yet. I was told that when rooting things you can't get any of the green under the stones, only ,only the roots, or else the chlorophyl won't work in that little spot and it will rot and the plant will die. Whether if the explaination is right or not, it seems to hold true.

I have anacharis that floats, grows roots, and when I plant it, it has done worse...whether it was a light issue moving from top to bottom, or because I messed up the rooting thing.

If I were you, I'd let it float, at least until it grew long, hardier roots. I don't know if this is possible, but you could also weight it down with that lead strip thingy they wrap it at the pet store to sink it. Maybe it would even root itself. I don't know if it leeches the lead though.
