getting a 30 gallon community tank soon. just wondering would a betta be ok in a community tank with other fish. are there any fish i couldn't keep with it (obviously another betta)
There are SO many threads about this, I'd recommend doing a search on "Betta tankmates", you should find TONS of info on here from previous posters.

No other male bettas. That's the main thing. Other fish it might not be agreeable with is other gouramies. But some bettas are very peaceful and timid. Others are very aggressive and will go after other fish. I would also not keep them with fin nippers such as tiger barbs, since the barbs will nip the long fins of the betta. Tetras, peaceful barbs, and cories are all great tankmates.

Here is a compatibility chart. this is where I started, it isn't the best, but ok. Read already posted threads, cause there have been 2 million in the last month. Always remember, regardless of what is said to be compatible, you need to observe the fish, a lot the first day and perhaps for a week or so, and if any aggressions occur, remove something. Have a back up plan for housing.
Look below for what my betta is with, it used to include mollies, and the frogs were in at one point.

I don't think I'd recommend that chart for Bettas. Every betta is very different from the next.
ADFs, Cories, some tetras are the main occupants that are recommended.

SOme of the fish on there are ok, it was just a starting point. I agree, I would test the situation with a betta and any fish. Don't rely on how it seems to act alone either. I had mine in a divided tank, and the one I thought was more aggressive, was scared of the other fish, seemed nervous. The one I thought wouldn't hold his own, did awsome.
According to that chart I wouldn't do guppies or gouramis, anything with fancy fins that remind a betta of another betta. Nor would I do tetras, heard the aggression could go either way.
Ghost shrimp can work, and snails.

Mine was fine with all my community except black widow tetras. They wouldn't leave him alone, I've never seen a betta swim so fast! So now he's got a 5 gal with 5 cory hastatus (Dwarfs)
The others that were o.k included blue rams, keyhole cichlids, neons and panda and peppered corys. But that's just my experience ;)

I have a 30 gal. community tank with a betta in it. There's harlequin rasboras, a cherry barb, some peppered corycats, rubberlip pleco, and ottos in there. Never had a problem, he's never been aggressive towards any of the fish.

I put my betta in the tank early on, and watched his personality. He didn't seem to chase the rasboras, so I added the pearl gouramis. There has been some posturing, but no atacks. I've been watching and have a 10 gal up and ready just in case.

I once put a betta in with pearl gourami and it was ok. The male checked out my betta and then thet ignored each other. I think the betta was intimidated by the size of the full grown pearl gourami. Might not be the same with smaller ones. Pearl are very peaceful however.
But beware guppies!
any small tetras, white cloud minnows, rasbora work ok ... avoid danios, tiger barbs

My betta gets along fine with zebra danios. He tried to chase them at first, but they were way too fast. Now, they mostly ignore each other.
