table salt

I think I read on the forums somewhere about using table salt as a sort of medication. I could be completely wrong, but if I'm not I would like to know if I could just drop a bit a tank with fish already in it. Can the salt be dropped into an already cycled and running tank? Also, if table salt is usable how much would I use. If I'm wrong about everything, should I be going out and buying the good stuff?

All the information you need to know on using table salt, btw this apply's to treating of other diseases as well, just be careful with raising the temperature some disease's do better in warmer water.
