I've got a 2.5 gal tank that I've found a filter and heater for and plan to take it to work for a betta. I'll probably put some java moss in...maybe some tiny java moss I have, Anything else? Probably a snail for algae control would be good.
I need to start it up to be sure it's not going to whirl the betta around like a blender, but I think it will be fine. It's a whisper filter specifically for 2 to 5 gal tanks.

I'd try and cycle it with the snail and some shrimp to be nice to the betta.

Is it the skinny whisper? Tallish? with the flow control thing? I have that, and it is good, but it is on a 5 g. Have you had experience with plants in that small a tank? I had anacharis in my 5 and all it did was die, even with a 50/50 mini light (can't remember more of the technical name.) when I put this plant in my 15, it flourished.
I agree, put the plant and a snail in first. THEN you know if the plant will survive or just give off ammo. and the tank can cycle. if the betta could talk, it would thank you.
Make sure to have a light on a timer or esle the weekends will be very dark and lonely for the little guy. Java moss should be able to grow just fine.

The betta might eat the snail.
The betta might eat the snail.
Some bettas are said to do that, mine never seem to. Of course it all depends on the snail as well. Any of the larger snails will probably be safe but then again they might start eating any plants. Mystery snails are said to be fine most of the time but occasionally they turn out to be the plant eating variety. Just don't get too attached to your plants if you opt for the bigger snails.

i have a 2.5 with a betta and an ADF in it and two ottos (yes i know thats small for ottos but they seem to like it and i had a really bad algee prob for a while and they wont be in there much longer) on my tank i have a red sea nano filter which is nice since its made for tanks that are .5 to 3gal and i keep it at full power so i would be carfull with the filter your going to use it mite be to strong and if it is i would definatly recomend to nano filter. i dont have any real plants in mine it just a slik one so i cant help there. i had a myistery snail in it for a while and it just could eat the algee good enough so he became loach food but gost shrimp would be good since they would eat the alge and left over food. also make sure that the light you use isnt to bright since the tank is so small and the light is reall close it may become to bright for the betta, i had a 15 watt incadesent blub in mine the betta would just hide behind the plant or my ADF's little castle so i switched to a penn plax aquari-lux PG, bulb which has a blue coating on it which lessins the intensity of the light and after that my betta was all over the place swimmin around

Nursie, sounds like a nice little tank :)
Have you considered going fully planted? I'm a huge fan of planted nano/pico tanks, they're loads of fun. While it's too small for a betta, I've got a 1g with ghost shrimp and ramshorns, planted with Anubias nana, Bacopa australis, Java moss and a few Echinodorus tenellus. It's got a Red Sea nano filter and a 13W PC desk lamp over it - if it was a 2 or 3g, I'm sure it would make a nice home for a betta :)

Hye just my $.02 But I have an a ADF and Betta in a small 2 gal eclipse with built in filter and a pencil heater. It's been doing great! I have 3 fake plants and a lil sandstone rock cave.
This is when I first set it up before the sandstone.
