I am looking to get a few Ottos for various tanks I have. However, not knowing a whole lot between SAE/CAE/Ottos, how can I tell I am actually getting an Otto? Are they any easy distinguishing characteristics, that even a dummy, like me, could see? Thanks.

I know Flying fox, and Siamese Algae eaters are confused being quite similar, Chinese Algae Eaters have very different markings and is most common but nowhere I have seen has had an otto called anything else. Now this is not to say that it couldn't be done but anyone that has seen an otto knows what they look like.

aquaticphotos.com has pictures from members here including a couple different species of otto.

Search Otocinclus on any search engine that returns photos.

I agree with Snake, while the others are easily mistaken for one another, an otto is always an otto no matter how you look at them... I really doubt there will be a problem...... it's sorta like telling the difference between a betta and a guppy...... you know a betta is a betta and a guppy is a guppy.

otto is realy tiny and cute looking with a broad black stripe. Little beady eyes
shining at you inside black horizontal stripe that runs the length of the body. Roundish head and lil sucker mouth. Greyish top and beige or greyish underside. About 1/2 inch long. In the lfs, you'll see them sucking on the wall of the tank together in a bunch.
