Hi, I have an Adult Bristlenose Female that has changed colour. She was a really dark brown and now she is light brown.

Q1) Is this normal?

Q2) Could this have something to do with breeding?

Cheers.

Wade

my to change colour. i used to think it was something to do with their diet, but i've read reports that it's mood related.

Plecs will turn pale like other fish in response to stress, but if what you're seeing is slight colour change in an unstressed fish, I agree with TONO, it's camoflage :)
My gold marble BN is dark with gold spots when he's on the substrate or glass, but turns a deep dark brown when he's hanging out on the bogwood. He blends in perfectly with the wood, almost disappears, and I'm sure that's why he does it ;)

I have a BN too. I asked the same question on another site. They had the same answer for me too. What she does is when she is one her log she has specific markings and patterns that change to a tan colour. And I have noticed that when she is on the cave we bought for her (that she never uses) she does it too. So it is ok, and normal. Try and see if yours does it at specific times or if there is a fish that picks on it alot.

Thanks for the replies. The BN is definately not stressed. None of the other fish even notice her. The male has disappeared again and I only found him last night, fanning his nest, so more BN babies on the way!!

Its just mood and or camoflauge, a lot of fish do that.

It can be due to either stress or just merging herself to the surrounding colours.

so males and females will do this? I don't know what I have, but it definately seems to be different shades sometimes, I thought it was just the light!!
