I'm cycling through my 30 with shrimp, and when that's done, can I add live rock from mail order (probably Gulf Rocks) to my tank after it's established? I'll not add anything in it for awhile. I'm just curious if I can get away with it...
Why didn't you just cycle the tank with the live rock? Water under the bridge...
Yes you can add live rock to a cycled tank. AS LONG AS THERE ARE NO ANIMALS IN IT!!! The tank will go through a second *mini* cycle when you put the rock in.
The reason I didn't do it in the first place is that I didn't have the capacity to have garbage cans to cure it. Therefore, I started to do the shrimp method, however, then realizing that I could've used the live rock. I might as well let it cycle now. And when you say no live animals, do you mean live organisms in the rock, which I'm assuming not, or fish or other inverts in the tank? Thanks for the response.
You'r right. I meant fish and inverts. I guess with the hitchhikers on the rock you dont have much of a choice . You can help with the survival rate of live rock critters by performing water changes if your ammonia gets too high. In your case, you will have a biological filter set up already, so ammonia should not be a problem. What are you using for filtration as of now by the way?
A Seaclone 100 and a couple of powerheads, with careful monitoring of water and water changes whenever needed. However, I have like 5 HOB filters laying around...perhaps I can take out a powerhead and through one in. Thanks for the help.
