As you may already know from other posts that I am looking a pressurized pool sand filter for the some supplemental mechanical filtration to polish up the water in my main tank. But after some research I see that some people use them as their main biological filtration.I see Mojo is using one for his pond so obviously they can be used as a main source of filtration( correct me if I am wrong). But some web sites are saying that sand filters should not be used in fish tanks because they clog too quick and you should use a bead filter, but if regularly cleaned I think that using them should be fine(maybe the people selling the bead filter just want to sell their product, but again I dont know). As I have had no experience with this kind of filter I was wondering if anyone has used one and could lend some information or advise o the subject.

Here is Mojo's pond.

The pool filter we are using at the store is a regular pool filter. What I did however to solve the quick clogging issue was to not use sand and instead use regular old bags of aquarium gravel in the filter. Estes dark brown infact (we had that extra lying around.)

The pond has to be backwashed on average every three months for a 25 second period to clean it out. The water in the pond is still excellent and clear with the gravel substitute.

If you go with gravel you just have to be careful when adding the gravel to the filter not to break the plastic strainer. The star shaped ones at the bottom. Trust me they do break if your not careful.

Thanks ScottoMacD , I sort of figured I might be able to do that, but it is good to know that some one else has done it.
