Ummm.... None of the above!! Now I don't want to get off on a rant here, but a contest that rewards women for being unrealistically thin just gets to me!! And yes, they do get scholarships and do humanitarian things, but it would be nice if they could do it without being televised in their bikinis!!! But they chose to participate so go for it! Of course, thats just my opinon....

and no, I'm not a (insert fat, ugly etc.) chick, I have a little cousin who just turned 13 and is on a DIET (encouraged by her mother no less  )!! She is skinny, plays sports and should not be concerned about losing weight! It makes me really upset, and I just hope that she only grows up to hate her body, like so many women do, and not in a hospital with a life threatening eating disorder. I think I need to go to bed now!! LOL :thud:

..... being unrealistically thin just gets to me!! ...televised in their bikinis!!! But they chose to participate so go for it! ...I can see your opinion, but I think their "freedom" to be thin and televised in bikinis is by far more important then censoring this pageant, or event. Perhaps they could be admired as "in shape" than "unrealistically thin". And, yes they did choose to do it...

Don't be mad at me, but it's another opinion and way of looking at the 'event'...

unrealisticly thin based on what reality? I am a quite active guy who has trouble not looseing weight. look at any of the triathalon type participants, are they unrealisticly thin? Being confident and happy with yourself does not have a size limit.

Do I really care that there is the whole beauty pagent thing? No not really, but I can say I respect the individuals that are in that contest for the poise, confidence and beauty that they have.

Considering I just watched a TV show on pageant participants for local titles in Texas, and the girl who won starved herself to loose 20 lbs by eating nothing but cottage cheese and water for months...i have to be quite skeptical. I doubt any of those girls would be that thin if not in pageants. And cameras add ten pounds. I find it interesting that the guys so far do not have a problem with the image this projects.

And as for trouble NOT losing weight - you're in the vast minority.

As adults, one has the right to eat very little before a pagaent. Being in shape is healthy.. I know, I'm not "in shape" with 20 or more pounds to lose. I do feel the extra weight slowing me down some.. I admire those that can stay fit.

I don't agree at all with eating disorders -- that goes both ways on the scale. Pageants to me do not at all promote bad eating habits.

In a way it's amazing some minority groups have not banned the contests - (yet)..

I'm going to continue finishing my grilled cheese and chips disorder... No eBay for this sandwich!

This girl was under 18 years old. And yes, you have the "right" to eat like that - but should you do it and be rewarded for it? That's ludicrous, IMO. Hey girls, you know what you should all do? Eat nothing but cottage cheese for three months! That's healthy! I'm going to try staying out of this thread. Having had some eating disorders I feel pretty strongly about it....

I'm still looking at who to pick on this Topic and Thread ...

People are responsible for themselves. The pageant is no more responsible for anorexia than McDonald's is for obesity.

I do agree that pageants are not to blame for any problems these girls may have. I would also never agree with the censorship of the event. But considering that most of those girls certainly are over 5'5 and well under 130 pounds, it is very hard to maintain such a physique in a healthy way. I just wish that our society was not so fixated on weight! Ironically we are heavier as a country than we have ever been!! The ideal weight and body size keeps shrinking, but "real" people get bigger and bigger every year!! Go figure!!

And of course men have no problem with any of this, they do not feel the pressure to look perfect the way that women do!

I'm voting for Canada, she looks like the most shapely within my limited attention span, and I'm a bit biased even if I can't pronounce her last name.

But Miss Universe? How many other planets are competing? The odds are definitely stacked in favour of the Earth.

Seriously though, while I agree that pageants support unhealthy eating habits, I didn't say "are responsible for" or "cause", merely support; they are simply a symptom of society. I know that that sounds like a cop-out, but they're called "beauty pageants" so the contestants are going to do their best to fit what we as society view as "beauty". If society viewed dangerously obeise people as 'beautiful', the issue would be exactly the opposite and we'd be talking about a woman who gained weight by eating nothing but deep fried foods for 3 months.

I'm with you Snake, I'm pretty active. I'll try not to lose weight, but I will anyway. Drives my rowing wife crazy.

I do think our image of an ideal woman is NOT "in shape" or healthy. When you starve yourself, you don't get necessary nutrients. Your energy levels go down and sometimes you get sick. I know a few people with eating disorders, and I used to have one off and on. My little brother we suspect is anorexic; he hated being fat because he got teased (which, I might add, comes from this scrawny ideal) and he has lost about thirty pounds in two months. He is obsessed with food and weight. He eats less than five hundred calories a day and excercizes several times a day. He cries if he exceeds the five hundred calorie limit. Tease if you want, but I think it is sad.

In the societies where the population is generally overweight, underweight is considered ideal. In a society where the population has little food and is starving, overweight women are considered ideal. A healthy weight won't be ideal until the societies can achieve a healthy weight.

I put my vote in for Miss Columbia, mostly because Miss Utopia Planitia/Mars didn't make it to the contest in time. I hear Miss Pluto was a real b**ch this year... some say she's colder than ice!
