I'm sure some of you have heard of "Coast to Coast AM with George Noory"..
I thought it would be a good place to post my strange rainbow photos. I also posted them here awhile ago.

>> the second column from the right, half way down, in orange, it says "Strange Rainbow". That takes you to the photos.. <<

I think the website is cluttered, but has a lot to offer. The radio show itself, can range from very interesting, to bizarre, to the extreme of ....well, I'll just say "no chance at all".

:D

Isn't that a form of a 'Sun dog', something like the halo that forms around the sun from high altitude ice crystals?

BTW, I remember that foto. Nice shot :)

That's what I always heard them called them when I was growing up.

Way to go, Joe! :joe:Thanks !..

Sundogs are halos... This was far from the sun, and not a halo.

Which is why it seemed out of the ordinary.. The rainbow was 'flat' or horizontal. Anyway, I've never seen one like it. Rainbows are common with all the thunderstorms in Florida, this rainbow was unique.....

Oh come to central Illinois, Joe...they are not uncommon up here.
Maybe the upper air colder here more, I don't know. They occur in patches of clouds, when there is no rain, just bright sun. They aren't around the sun, at least the ones I've seen. What I've heard of as the cause is water vapor in the clouds, or rain in the sky, but I would go for what MAtak says also.
My mom always said they meant the weather is going to change.

:)IMLO (In My Laymens Opinion) the high cirrus clouds appear well defined and well under the sun in your pic, which may be causing the rainbow as opposed to the halo. I still think it is ice crystals. But IMLO. Say, don't we have a couple of staff meteorologists here at AC? An amateur and a pro? I'll bet they could give us the answer.
