hey guys i posted this in the pond forum but no one goes there and i would like an aswer soon. heres the original post....

hey everyone, im new to mini ponds and have just bought a 150 gallon with a small waterfall , fountain and filter. the large part is about 2 feet deep by 4 by 3 and the small part is about 1 1/4 deep by 3 by 2. I was curious how may of those small feeder goldfish i could stick in each part. I think it will look pretty cool next to my patio. Oh and dont worry they will only be there for the summer months then they will go in my friends pond.

Thanks for your guys's help

Well,It depends...
How many fish can your friends pond take, full grown? Will you keep taking them back in the summers, or do they just need to fit there This summer? How much filtration do you have, plants or no plants? It's been my experience that feeder gf arent too healthy, so expect to take extra good care of them, possibly need to medicate, and still loose some. of course, racoons, and birds could probably get them from that pond too....
I have heard "20 gals for the first Goldfish and 10 gal for each thereafter". that would put you at what, 14?? sounds like too many, but wait for someone who knows more to answer.

Small feeder goldfish grow up to be big feeder goldfish... and they will need to be taken inside if you live in a cold climate... which means you will need 1 or 2 fairly large tanks. I, personally, would do something different than feeder goldfish.... white clouds or danios would be other options... but there are plenty of other fish that would also work nicely.

My friends pond is a HUGE real pond. Probably about 15 feet deep by 60 feet by 80 feet. Basically every summer i was planning on buying like 8-12 and when summer was over i would let them go. And repeat the process over and over.

Would koi be a better option. maybe like 6-8

What do you mean by "let them go"? I hope in your friend's pond :).

seems to me that would work. for some years anyway. Ponds forum might know how many your friends pond could eventually support. I prefer the feeder fish idea to the koi idea. You may know all this already, but here's my thinking on it:
Try to pick out the healthiest looking feeders from the healthiest looking tank you can find.
Take care to get the fish healthy over the summer and take care with the release, (change over the water gradualy, match temp etc) .
The better the filtration the more fish it will support within reason. plants help a little also. Since it will be only a Temporary home I think the main thing you'd have to consider would be the wastes, not stunting or physical crowding. You would need to vacuum the bottom of the pool and change some of the water occassionaly during the summer. I wouldn't put more than eight. I would expect to loose a few but I dont think that at that number the losses would be from overcrowding.
These are just my best guesses.
