it insures no 'dead spots' in the main part of your tank
it reduces the collection of debris in your gravel
cons ...
your fish can dig it up unless you glue the piping to the tank bottom
your fish can expose the pipes unless you glue 'camouflage' right to them
it can actually aggravate collection of debris in caves and corners
