i went to a LFS yesterday and bought a beautiful piece of driftwood mounted to a flat piece of rock( guessing slate ). I asked the lady working if the wood underwent any kind of treatment and she said she wasnt sure but they were sterilized or something but would still "stain" the water, and that it surely would not sink until its water logged.
Well i wasnt going to put this in my aquarium until its been washed off and most of the stuff that discolors the water has leaked out. Well i looked for something to put the driftwood in but couldnt find anything so in a last resort i put it in a bathtub( dont worry i use the shower lol ). I must say theres so much stuff floating in that water now, mostly little pieces of wood and dust and whatever else. And the water is discoloring the longer its left in there. My bathtub wont fill up enough to completely submerge it but i put it on its side and it can submerge most of it except it floats. I dont have anything to weigh it down so im hoping that once part of it waterlogs that it will be able to hold itself under.
So now to my questions. Since my bathtub is obviously filled up with tap water, with the driftwood waterlogging itself with chlroinated water will this come back to haunt me? or will the dechlor take care of it just fine when i put it in my aquarium?
Should i change the bathtub water daily? or just leave it in the same water for a few days before draining and filling it back up.
Its a fairly large piece of driftwood, how long does it usually take to stop discoloring the water? And how long till it completely waterlogs. Im not in any kind of rush to add the piece into my aquarium but i would like to get a rough estimate. And yes i know the amount of time depends on the size, type, and other factors of the driftwood, but for a piece that fills up half of a 55 gallon what do you think roughly?
