10 gallon tank
no plants
per aquarium pharmacueuticals
ammonia 0
nitrites 0 *
nitrates < 20
symptoms
begginning 3 days ago, fish (2" fantailed GF, only fish in tank) began to repeatedly surface and 'gulp air'. spending a Lot of time appearing to 'drink' from the surface
also, dorsal fin, not clamped but, held lower than previously.
today a couple of times was hanging oddly, tail down, 'nose' up in the water.
otherwise swimming,and eating normally.

History
A few days prior to onset of gulping, I had begun adding melafix to the tank 1tsp/day.
This is one of the fish that had been living in high amonia/nitrite water until i got it one month ago.
I have been keeping it in very nice clean water and it had shown no symptoms of anyting until now. That I could tell.
It's fins were nearly all rotted off when I got it. they have been growing over the month, though slowly. The fish seemed ok, so I thought it would be alright to add melafix to perhaps help with fin regrowth.

What Ive done so far
well, discontinued melafix and did a 30% water change.
Lowered the water temp, and upped surface agitation.
Looked for info on gf illnesses.

Note on water quality
I have been doing 30 - 50 % weekly changes. testing either b4, after or both. ammonia always 0 nitrites always 0 nitrates never above 20.
last water change was 3 days ago. Tested today again, and got a nitrite reading of .25. partial water change seems to have put it back to 0 for now.
oh the ph i only tested at set up of tank and again today. both times read 7.6, i think.. the highest PA reading, that is the same as the tap water.

I am wonderring if damage from the ammonia in the past could be showing up only now. ( seems unlikely, but thought id ask.)
I really don't have much experience with sick fish. Iwill appreciate Any input.
Thank you

Make sure there is lots of oxygen and water flow.

Whats the water temp? Try doing a cool water change, and maybe set up a air pump. See what happens.

Was first thig I tried, thanks. I dont't know the temp exactly, but it is definitely cool. I realy thought that would help, but it hasn't.
