Newwbie question - I have gravel in my tank now and i want to make a sand section - I figure i can section it off while i pour the sand in and after it setles remove the berrier so its like a beach underwater--- will it stay in its area or just mix with the tank?

What? So you have gravel now, and you want to put sand over it? Or do you want part sand/part gravel?
If you want to experiment you can make a gravel mat by filling a shallow tray with silicone and topping it off with silicone. You can then place the gravel mat where yo want and then add sand in the area where it is required. See the following link for a better explanation of what I am talking about (actually this is where I got the idea, although I have never tried it myself).
