I've had a ten gallon set up for quite some time now with six danios and a CAE. Well, I got rid of the danios and today got some new fish. I got a male betta, two swordtails male and female, and five neon tetras. There is something wrong w/ them and I'm worried! :( The two swordtails are at the top and not looking very healthy. The betta was hanging out at the bottom but he seems ok now.
PH~7.6
Nitrites~little above zero
Amonia~o
GH~4
KH~13
I do have two plants in there as well I've had for awhile. I thought maybe they were not getting enough oxygen so I took out some of the water. Any suggestions? I don't want to kill my fish the first day!

They probably are in a little shock from different water parameters/new environment. Just keep a close eye on them for a few days, maybe do a 25% water change...

How long has the tank been seutp? You said "quite some time" but you're still showing nitrites? A well established tank shouldn't show any nitrites and you might also have given them a bit of nitrite poisoning, which can cause them to gasp for air.

umm....

My tank has been set up for a couple of years. BUT....I moved in August and changed all the water. I kept the sponges and gravel the same.

I agree with morleyz. Unless the fish brought something from the lfs (disease or parasites)in which case you should be seeing more drastic signs soon. Do a water change to get rid of the nitrite and keep an eye on the fish and nitrites.

I was told to add salt to the tank on another board. So I added a teaspoon of that into the tank. They seem to be doing better.
