I had 3 tiger barbs and they were being a bit of bullies, so I did a little research on them and found out that they were fin nippers, but I also read stating that if I had 5 or more, that they just nip amonst themselves... so I bought 3 more (total of six) and they are just as bad if not worse. They really pick on my red platy and one of them is starting to harras my algea eater (I'm not exactly sure what kid).

Should I give them some more time to settle down, or will they just continue to be problematic. I really like how they look but I don't know what to do.

Your best bet is to sell back the platy and the algae eater. If not soon you platy will probably be killed by the TB's. Then, they'll do the exact same to the algae eater.

Do you have any other fish in the tank?

My experience is tiger barbs and platies don't mix, no matter how many barbs you have in there. Personally, I don't know why most places list tiger barbs as a peaceful community fish.

Right now I have
6 tiger barbs
1 red platy
4 zebra danios
2 Neon Tetras
2 Glowlite tetras
2 algea eaters

I would like to have an Angle or some other larger type fish as a "show" fish for the tank, so I was thinking it would be better to get rid of fin nipping tiger barbs as I would think they would be problematic with the angles.

As the other alternative, what's some good fish to go with the Tiger Barbs?

First post!

I have been looking at fish tanks again after years and years without (college and the post-graduation apartment hopping have prevented me), and the last tank I had eventually became a Tiger Barb tank, as they killed all the rest of my FW fish- platys, etc. It was ten years ago, so I can’t remember what, but I will agree with the poster above that suggested you go ahead and get rid of whatever else is in there with the things- they are downright aggressive.

I, too, was taken in by a LFS employee who just read the “peaceful community fish” sign and said “Sure, that will work for you.”

What size is the tank? A friend of mine keeps 6 tiger/mossy barbs with 3 balloon mollies and a 3-spot gourami with no aggression issues in a 35g tank. The barbs only associate with one another.

Its a 55 gal... but I think I'm just going to get rid of them because I don't want to have to worry about conflicts with future fish.

I have 8 Tiger Barbs with an Angel and 4 Gouramis. I have very few agression issues with the other fish. I also have 2 GIANT Danios(when you see "Giant Danio" in the pet store its just a name...mine are 3½" to 4" long) and I have named them Starksey and Hutch because they wont allow the TB's to mess with anyone in the tank other than themselves....Maybe I am just lucky

Hmm, guess i can rule out one option for my tank...I was thinking of putting tiger barbs with my platy and gourami. Such a shame tiger barbs are so nippy, they're really cute when small...and still pretty when bigger :)
