i've got bolivian ram fry in a 12G tank with their parents.

the fry have been free swimming for 2 days now. they've been eating filter gunk, bbs, and crushed powdered flake food.

i'd like to move the parents to another tank to lower the bioload in the fry tank and also to prevent the parents from eating the fry, however remote that possibility is.

as far as i can tell, the parents don't feed the fry and there is no need to protect the fry as there are no predators in the tank. since the fry are free swimming now, is there any reason i shouldn't remove the parents?

fish fry don't need to bond with their parents like mammals do they? :o

the amount of learning that happens is something we don't know much about. the practice of removeing the parents may be the source of poor behavioral skills in some fish. They do have some of it innately as instincts but some things have to be learned.

dang!

i removed them last night before i read your posts. foolish of me. :mad2:

you make some good points i hadn't considered. would it be foolish now to try put them back?

fry seem to be ok. they're eating bbs and crushed powdered flake food. but they are more scattered as you predicted.

If you put them back down they may be eaten by the parent(s).

that's what i was afraid of. oh well, live and learn.

the fry are doing well at the moment. time will tell if this was the right decision.

thx for your reply, NT.
