I'm converting from a sponge filter to a aqua clear for my 20 gallon tank. The sponge filter is cycled, but I don't think it filters the water enough.
My question is, how long do I need to run both of the filters so that the AC can be colonized by the bacteria living on my sponge?

I suggest taking the sponge filter and squeezing the muck from it into the AC sponges. Then put both back into use in the tank for another day or a week. You could even repeat this several times.

I would recommmend running the sponge along withe the AC for about a month or so, depending on your fish load. If you have a large fish load, change water twice as often after you take out the sponge filter for about a week just to be safe.

4 weeks is just what I would recommend. It most likely will not take that long, pringing a new filter to an established water environment usually only takes two to three weeks but since your tank is a little smaller I would be safe with 4.

Smaller has nothing to do with longer. 4 weeks is what I always say because it can tank some time for the bacteria to grow if the temp is too cold, theres not enought food, etc.

I would just leave both filters on there permanantly, there is no such thing as overfiltration.
