i just recently got a 30 gallon tank i was wondering what kind of fish are suitable for this size tank. i was thinking about 1 angelfish 2 bala sharks and i want some smaller fish to school but i didnt know what smaller fish are compatible with angelfish and bala skarks. any info will help. also would like to know where to purchase weird fish from on the net.

One angel will be okay, but balas get way too big for a 30. Of the 'shark's, the rainbow would be better suited for a 30.

For schooling fish, look at cardinals, glow lights, or rasboras. You'll want to stick with fish that get a bit bigger than an inch, to reduce odds of predation by the angel.

OrionGirl is right, in even only relatively decent conditions Bala's can get really big, fast, and are way too active to be housed for long in a 30g. You might look at the Barbus eutaeniam (still a little big), the Puntius arulius or the Barbus ablabes .

Balas grow to 13 inches when they are full grown. Way too big for a 30 gallon.

If you want a "shark" type of fish, try a red tailed shark. They grow to 6 inches and are peaceful if you only put one of their kind per tank.

For the grouping fish, I woudl recommend something that grows bigger than 2 inches to prevent the angel fish from eating them. Perhaps diamond tetras, or congo tetras.

I have a school of scissortails, I think they can be really pretty under the right light, very shimmery. Also, mine schoold together very well, they get to be around 4 inches or so...Not very colorful, but I do think they have a vague resemblance to balas, if you liked the looks of those

When I think of my old 30 gallon I can't help but miss the really nice pair of Jewel cichlids I had in there...spawning! In the mountain stream! Waaaay too natural for me! [/oblique reference to funny commercial] Hehe.
Seriously, a nice pair of small cichlids in there would be very enjoyable.

I was at a clients place fixing her computer today, and she had a new tank setup. 30 gal, had a school of 10-12 tetras of some sort - one of the larger varietes. Looked very nice in a lightly planted tank.
