General polyfilter question

Ok, some help here please ... I'm lost sometimes unless I have something specific (or as my friends say, "pacific") to guide me ...

I bought some polyfilter for my 20g. Its filter is a Penguin 330 HOB, with 2 biowheels and 2 baskets for carbon etc.

Where exactly do I place the polyfilter? In one of the empty baskets? Between biowheel and the spout from which the water flows back into the tank? Elsewhere? AAAH! I'm such a visual learner sometimes. :duh:

generally speaking you would put it BEHIND the carbon filter (inbetween the bio-wheel and carbon) but that all depends on your way of doing things.

When I had that type of setup I would set it up this way so that any large particals that were caught could be easily washed off during water changes from the carbon filter (still how I do it today) and I would recommend using the basket if its not rigid material so it doesnt become "loose" in the tank
 
These are blocks of polyfiber as shown here so the basket wouldn't be necessary to contain these.

I appreciate your answer! While I was waiting for a response, I placed the polyfiber in the filter baskets, and in less than 12 hours, they have picked up quite a bit of accumulation. I've now moved them to where you indicate, and will see where that gets me.

Not sure if this material has the consistancy of filter sponge (which IMO is what you should use), but if it is firm enough, toss the carbon and use this in all the slots maximizing surface area for bio-activity. As posted in many threads, you don't need or really want to use carbon on a regular basis. You need max surface area for bacteria and good mechanical to pull out particulate matter.

Now I will be the first to admit I'm not one to try modifications, as the only thing which outweighs my clumsiness is my lack of coordination ... but this is a very intriguing design! I'm not exactly sure what is going on in step #2, without looking at my HOB filter, but this is very worth checking into.
