If my nitrate levels were to go up, what are some good ways to get them back down? I think the highest the level should be is 40ppm, without live plants, what are good ways to bring down the level? Water changes?

yep...water changes.

The cheapest, most reliable way to reduce nitrates is to reduce stocking levels, avoid overfeeding and of course...water changes.

There is something you can buy called nitra zorb (I think) but its pretty expensive, and it really only covers the problem up temporarily, it does nothing to "fix" it. Not overstocking, feeding, and the water changes are really the answer :)

The "cheap" option is to do water changes and add plants.
Stuff like anacharis are fast growing and supposedly take in the most nitrates.

Plus, of course, high nitrates are just an indicator of other things that are growing in levels in your tank. If you add a chemical to remove nitrate you won't have any indication of how the other levels are doing (hormones, other organic residues). This is a problem in planted tanks and the reason why weekly water changes are usually suggested.
