I've never had my amazons flower, but I have had them produce offspring through budding which then end up floating to the surface.

My amazon sword has produced a long flower stalk but the blooms were evidently fairly insignificant. Each node of the stalk is now producing plantlets. The stalk broke the water surface on my 55 gallon.

Yep, they have a small, 4-5 petal bloom. The stalk must be able to break the water surface in order to bloom. White petals, a small yellow center, stays on for 2-5 days in undisturbed.

Almost all aquatic plants will bloom if given the right conditions.

I have some late summer flower pictures in a road side ditch with flowers about 3+inches across, like Orchid flowers. Truly a nice looking flower by any standard. Most in the genera are smaller, about 1 to 1/2" inch across, most are white petals and yellow inside.
They are common weeds in road side ditches throughout most of the Southern USA.

The stalks from my amazon swords don't have a problem breaking the water surface. In fact, I've had some grow like vines out the top of the tank with lengths of 3-5 feet. None of the nodes ever had flowers though. What's missing?

I think it depends on the species of sword plant. i have a E. osiris and i remember reading something about it not flowering in aquariums. It produces flower stalks but never flowers.
