I have a female Severum alone in a 29 gallon tank. She has begun to lay eggs, sticking them against the rear glass pane of the tank. The eggs resemble sesame seeds. The eggs are stuck to the glass in a circular grouping about the diameter of a softball and there are approximatley one hundred. At first I thought that the cluster was an odd algae outbreak, but late tonight I watched as she pressed her vent against the glass and "ejaculated" the eggs. I've had her since she was a juvenile, for just over three years, and I've never witnessed this. Is this irregular (there's no male present)? Is this a sign of anything? Any advice is appreciated.

Well it was probally just because shes been hold the eggs in for a long time and she needed them to get out....i dont know

Well, she's at it again, and yet again I am fascinated. Thought I'd bring this thread out of the dark archives and see if any new members can shed some light on this topic for me.

Hehe Same thing happens to mine. She's been in the same tank with a Festivum, Leporinus, Convict, and a couple of giant Danio's.

She has laid eggs about a dozen times over 4 years I've had her, yet none of the other fish of fertilized them so I figure eh, a meal for the others.

I figure the Convict is a female she's the smallest of the bunch.

The first 8-10 times she laid eggs i noticed it was due to keep the water a lil warm 80f Degree. And she spawned practically bi-weekly. I turned it to about the 76f mark and then she's only laid eggs maybe once a year.

Hope this sheds some light otherwise i'm quite interested in more info.

I'm sure egg laying is something normal, like chicken laying eggs or women ovulating. The eggs will only hatch if fertilized and since no male is present they're just food for the other fish.

I know turtles will sometimes lay eggs, even with no male present, maybe fish will do it once in a while as well.
