Update: So, my adventure into the brackish tank environment is going well. This morning's readings are at 1.002 SG, PH 7.5, etc..

A few questions:
The BBG's are not taking frozen foods as they once did. They eat only live worms and BBS. They are refusing mosquito larvae and the other normal staples that they ate before such as frozen blood worms. Any other suggestions to bring variety into their diet?

I added 6 shrimp to the tank when I started cycling towards brackish 2 months ago...last week one of the larger gobies was swimming around with a shrimp head sticking out of his mouth. Is it OK for them to eat these guys? I don't mind, just wondering? The shrimp are about 1 inch long...as long as some of the smaller gobies... On the last count there were still 4 shrimp swimming around, but I know that they can hide well.

Also, does anyone has any advise on plant ferts that will not hurt this tank? I have some water sprite, one hardy mini-sword and a few onion plants that seem to be surviving/looking good in this tank (so far) and feel like I shouldn't add the same things to a BW tank as FW for the plants. Any thoughts?

Java fern does especially well in brackish water if you are looking for a Brackish plant. BBG's are very picky fish and frozen foods may simply bore them nowadays, who knows? You might have to train them or wiggle the worms around or make them move by squirting them in with a turkey baster. Also, I don't see why BBG's eating shrimp would be a worry.

I have recently had the same problem, except I couldnt make it to portland to buy the live stuff. So, being stuck with only frozen brineshrimp and bloodworms, I just kept feed it to them. What I do is run the tip of thecube under warm water until it is slightly melted then dip that tip in the water until a few float off. The gobies dont really like it much but they eat. what is left on the substrate is greedily devoured by my ghostshrimp. Oh, yeah, I barely use any of the cube and end up throwing it in my other tanks.

as for ferts, I splash a wee dab of flourish in mine, just a few drops because its only a 10g with a few java ferns and some moss in it. Hope this helps, PJ

Oh, yeah, again. your lucky yours eat the shrimp, mine havent touched em yet!

Shouldn't minimum readings for a brackish tank be at least 1.005? When I first started brackish a couple years ago, I was at 1.002 and stuff just kept dying and getting weird fungal infections.

Well that's not good... Brackish is anywhere from 1.001 (not really brackish at all.) to 1.019 (nearly marine). The salinity shouldn't give you fungal infections....

Live worms are not something you want them to be eating for a long time, or on any kind of regular diet. Get them onto frozen foods ASAP. If you keep feeding them live foods they're never going to accept frozen foods. The salinity should definately be higher than 1.002 though, get it up to around 1.005.
