Hi guys. I found this forum today when I decided to get on the internet to search for help. Heres what happened to me/fish during the past week. :help:
To give you some background. I have a 10 gallon tank for my freshwater fish. I bought last June. I only had maybe two fish die within a year. Last week a different story! :thud: Ive used test strips and the levels seem great. Ive changed the water.
I dont know what has happened but Ive had over 8 fish die in 1 week. I emptied and cleaned the tank out after fish number 3 died but they still continue to pass away. This morning my guppie that has been with us since day one has passed away. Last nite he would just lay at the very bottom right on top the gravel, almost burying himself it in. This morning he was still down there, but moving around more showing alot more life. But now he just passed away.
My big Guppie just hangs around the heater on top. Another guppie hangs around the bottom. The tetras seem to be in the middle, and one red eye tetra is zooming around like nothing is wrong. The algae fish is doing his thing as usual. The water temp reads as usual 74-76.
Now heres what I did different about 2 weeks ago before they all started dying.
1. I bought vacation food (cause where leaving next week) I wanted to just test the vacation food a week before we left. So I put it in the tank last week to see if it would dissolve properly. It started too very slowly, but it didnt seem to be good enuff as the fish where swimming around the top for food and anytime I entered the room they would fly to the top looking for food. So I took it out and just started to feed them their flakes as usual. about 3 days later they started dying.
 2. The room where the fish tank is at got very humid and hot cause of the very hot weather where having here in PA. My outside thermoter on the tank was reading 80. so i turned the heater down to the lowest (70 I believe) thinking the tank water was too hot due to the weather. Is it possible that it was reading the temp of the room and not the actual water temp? :help: Cause my heater light would come on at around 75. Some fish developed ICK and I took care of that pretty quick with QUICK CURE liquid that I bought.
3. over two weeks ago, I got some new tetras from wal-mart. About 3 of them. They where all orange pretty cool. They looked fine put them in the tank.
Those are the 3 things that I did differently or was different than usual.
When I sit back trying to figure what is happening these are the 3 things I think of. I just dont know whats going on. What does it mean when the fish look like their laying in the gravel instead of moving around?
One question I have is, my heater. is it possible that the heater is broke? even if the light comes showing that it is working? I may have to get a temperature gauge that floats in the water I guess.
Well sorry for the long post. but hopefully you can provide some information on what I can do or whats going on. My wife thinks maybe I should change the gravel since its a year old. I wash the gravel everytime I clean the tank though.
Thanks guys.
