Mixing different species of Apistos?

Hey guys,

I currently have a 72 gallon heavily planted tank, with a pair of Apisto panduros. Other bottom dwellers include 2 clown loaches. Every other community fish i have is a top or middle dwelling species. I also have some small ghost shrimp, and a couple of wood/fan shirmp in the tank.

My question, how many apistos would you reccomend at maximum for a 72 gallon? Ive heard that people have had no problems, unlike Rams with "extra" Apistos. Also, is it ok to mix several different species of Apistos in one tank? Again, ive heard with Apistos, this is ok to do.

Any clarification would be much appreciated!

I am not sure but I do know that they are still cichlids so there is a chance for incompatability but in a tank that size I dont think it would be much of a problem. That is of course you get a hyper agressive ahole of a fish.

If you do try another species or another pair, only get ONE more pair/trio (depending on the species) It may work it may not. Nothing is a sure bet with apistos. People seem to forget that they are still cichlids, only difference is they are little, but the attitude is still big.

Alright, thanks guys.

Ok, so what if i got the same specie again, another pair. Any problems there?

And the reason i ask is that exact same reason, they are cichilds!

Folks in a 75 gallon tank you can easily keep several pairs of Apistos. I would suggest around 6. The key is creating territories for them. Do this by making caves and planting plants and rocks around the caves so that they feel isolated are "out of sight out of mind" In other words create little caves with plants and rocks so as to create little homes for them. They will select their own little homes and take up residence. In such environments we really get to see the dynamic social behavior of these Cichlids. In fact in Nture they are found very very thick in waters with leaf litter and we say them by the hundreds with fish of all ages all around. One breeder I know breeds his in this manner too and I have seen hundreds of Apistos in a 100 gallon tank! We can also put many of them into a tank and do something similar to an african cichlid tank and by oputting in so many no one fish will get picked on. Do a search on The Krib and Apistogramma mailing list Also be sure to search the archives of the Apistogramma mailing list as this has been well documented. Good luck with your new 75 and get some more Apistos!
