got back and the whole bottum was coerd in food... :mad: :(

So i changed about 1/2 the water and tried vacuuming up all the food (still some left) and changed the filter. Now the PH levels are WAY high but my 3 danio zebras are still alive and active. What exactly should i do? a little over 9 gallons BTW

change more water? waht are some things i should get to fix it (drops?)

ph = 8.2 or 8.44, somthing crazy
amonia = 1 or maybe 2ppm
nitrite = 0ppm
nitrate = 0 to 5 ppm

Plan for next time you are gone. Get a multiday pill box and dish out the amount of food you want them to have each time they are fed. That may help.

This is a wonderful idea. Make sure to hide the food from your surrogate feeder as well. It's way too easy for them to put in the little amount that they should be fed and think, "Man, that's not nearly enough food... Ah, here's a bottle of it, I'll just add some more in." Remove the temptation and they are forced to feed what you leave.

I gotta say- Automatic feeders aren't a safe option. There are too many instances where the auto feeder goes on the fritz and dumps ALL of the pre-set food into the aquarium. I've heard of this happening with almost all makes and models.
If you are leaving for a week or less, no food is better than too much food. Your fish will be able to handle it if you overfeed a few days prior to leaving. The pill box is the most effective "auto feeder" I've heard of.

Having a person feed your fish is a great idea if they can be trusted. My autofeeder is a great thing and i like to use it for short duration trips, especially in tanks that have fry. The worst thing that coudl happen with my Hagen feeder is that it would stop working or the food would get stuck and not come out. Over feeding can't happen.

I like the pill box idea as well. Of course training is also good. I trust my parents now.

If that's what happens when you leave for a weekend, you should get yourself a padlock for that tank. ;)

For now, partial water changes w/ gravel vac'ing are your best friend.
