Don't sniff ammonia! Man, that's a health hazard. Anyway, as to how much it takes, it all depends on the tank. I'd take the lady at her word about the 5%. You just have to add a measured dose, test it, add another measured dose etc. until you get up to ~5 ppm. Be sure to write down how much you put in to get to what point. It can help when you need to add ammonia later on. As for the test kit, why do you think it isn;t working?

no colour shows up in the vile, unless maybe i put to much ammonia in teh tank and it just stays clear if its over 5ppm because the kit is only good to 5 ppm.but i doint think i did.i only put a couple lidfulls in

just go to Wal-mart and get their ammonia. It's pure. dump a little in every day until you start to see movement on your tests. If you think that your test thing is bad, just dump stright ammonia in the test tube and test that. If it is still clear, then go get another testing kit. I think people in here make this stuff out to be rocket science, but it is really very simple. I think the first time around we are all a little sketchy on why things aren't happening right away. It will come around, I promise.
