The last few days my blue rams have been a little cranky, chasing every one when they come near a piece of driftwood in the tank. Last night when I got home from work there on the driftwood I see eggs. Now I understand what was going on with them. They are talking turns guarding them. What should I expect to happen here? They are in a 55g community tank and that is the only place I have for them.

Well here's an update. I was doing my water change this morning and when I got in the vicinity of the driftwood, the male charged and actually hit my hand. (still cranky) The female was guarding the eggs. Since then the female has been eating them and there are not too many left. Do you think it had anything to do with me doing the water change? This was their first spawn.

good for you male! :thm:

that'll teach you to go near his eggs!

imo, i don't think you did anything wrong. most likely the parents would have eaten the eggs anyway. if the parents don't feel they can safeguard the eggs and resulting fry, they'll most likely eat the eggs. if you want to successfully raise fry, i think you'll have to move the pair to their own tank. it's too "busy" in a community tank for them to feel comfortable enough NOT to eat the eggs.

I thought he was just being a typical male(Cranky) :) Thanks for the info as I thought it might have been me. I'm not really trying to have a successful spawn, plus I don't have another tank for them at this time. So nature will just have to take its course. It is a very busy tank with the fish I have in there.

you never mentioned your water parameters. They will raise them in a community tank though survival will be tough because of predation and yes they will eat them because they think they wont survive anyway. As JMO said your best bet would be a tank to themselves. Goo dluck

Water parameters are as follow
Ammonia~0ppm
Nitrite~0ppm
Nitrate~ 10ppm
PH~7.2
GH~40ppm
KH~40ppm
Temp~78

BTW Davesanchez your rams look great!!!

That is a big help. First of all your temperature is way too low!!!! These guys come from the "llanos" Imagine rainwater filled shallow lakes no more then a foot to 2 foot deep in the full sun in Colombia! The temperature gets to 90 f easy. Rams needs are like discus when it comes to warmth, more so in fact. For breeding they need 84 f - 86 f. Anything over 80 f is better then nothing but really you need to be over 82 f. 86 f is not too warm! Crank up the temperature and you will be amazed. This is nature’s defense for the rams think about it not many species will be in these shallow waters at these high temperatures.

Your water is very good! Try some peatmoss or Oak leaves and you will drop that pH to 6.5 to 5.5 easily since your KH or buffering capacity/alkalinity is fairly low (a good thing when you want to drop your pH, also a good thing when it comes to South American fish) Other then that keep doing what you are doing your Rams like it! Look forward to hearing about them breeding again.

They will eat the eggs if they feel overly threatened so yes doing the water change probably did have something to do with it, but after they spawn a few times they will get used to having you around and realise you arent much of a threat and will probably stop eating them.
