I Read All The Time About People That Really Like The Fluval Filters, So When I Moved To A 70g Tank I Bought The Fluval 404. I've Had It Running Since Feb 05. This Past Week I Woke Up To A Strange Noise. Ivery Shortly Discovered That My Filter Had Leaked About 40g Of Water On My Carpeted Floor. I Was Leaking Around The O Ring Of The Lid. I Called My Lfs And They Said They Very Often Have Complaints Of The Same Thing Happening. Their Normal Return Policy Is 30-60 Days But Since They Have Had So Many Complaints They Took It Back. I Bought A Emperor 400 Instead. I Relly Didn't Care For The Fluval And I Am Actually GlaD I Had A Reason To Return It.

The fluval thing is sort of like religion... if its your religion then it's fine... but to everyone else you're wrong. Fluval 4 series filters IME is not my religion... My girlfriend on the other hand is a follower of the Fluval. I did manage to convince her into getting a Eheim 2026 instead of another Fluval though when she saw mine. I had a Fluval for about 2 years. Since the day I got it I could never get it to 1) get the siphon thing going with the pumper doo dad on top and 2) once I managed to get a siphon going in it to keep it going all the way to fill the canister so that the pump would start moving water once I plugged it in...

after my first cleaning I could not get the o-ring to seal 3 times in a row. Finally it sealed. Two more cleanings the same thing.... next cleaning it took me 45 minutes to get it to seal... next one it leaked until the thing started running and then after the next cleaning it leaked whether it was running or not... it leaked then while running at a rate of about 5 gallons per minute... it was about 10 per minute when it was off... I tried new o-rings... various "seal lubes" and other things and nothing... it just leaks like a screen door on a submarine

At that point I circular filed it and ordered an Eheim 2026.... no comparison...

oh...

and my girlfriend has had her Fluval long before I got one (didnt know her then) and then she STILL has hers running about 3 years later and it works great and you gotta fight with it to get the top on it's so snug... I'd swear they were NOT the same filter except they have the same 404 label on them...
