i always wanted a pond. and i had an idea, and wanted to know if u think it would work? if i dug a hole in the ground, got a 70 or larger gallon tubberware container (its long not tall), put it in the hhole, with some sort of substrate, and got a filter on it , and put in a few goldfish. would that work
also, would i even need a filter.

Surface area equals evaporation rate, give or take other factors.
You say it's not tall, meaning it wouldn't be very deep, right?
You'd probably evaporate way too fast then.

i mean it is longer than it is tall.
and i would do water topoffs and all that.

Yeah, sure you could do a tub pond. Read the other threads in this section and try www.fishpondinfo.com It is getting kind of late in the season to set it up and let it cycle on its own. Maybe you'll need to "cheat" with Bio-spira or material from a cycled tank. You should really get going to buy your plants, most places only stock pond plants seasonally.

I would add some oxygenating plants like a bunch of anacharis or hornwort.
Your idea should most certainly work if you top off the water.
Good luck!

One question:
How many and how big of goldfish did you put in it?

Okay I would look for something other than goldfish.
Maybe some white cloud mountain minnows?

those would work or you can get those blue kiddie pools or for something like 40 get a small preformed or liner. i would just add small minnows i got one thats probably only 50 gallons but it is filled with plants, i mean you cant even see water but it keeps the fish happy and theres even some frogs in there now i just top off i dont even have a filter or anything to move the water around in there.
