Hi everyone

I've just returned to fishkeeping after a long break from the hobby.

When I kept them before it was always considered a good idea to drill a small whole in your canister filters intake pipe about a quarter of the way down inside the tank. This will break the syphon if you are unlucky enough to have a major filter leak and ensure that the you can only lose a quarter of the tanks water.

What do you guys think.

I don't do safety holes in canister intakes or returns as I've never had a catastrophic canister failure. But I always do in returns from sumps, etc. when they return below the water level. Those are drilled just below the water suface, not deep. Should there be a problem with the sump, the loss from the display tank would be small, not anything like 1/3 of the tank's volume.
