I haven't done anything new to the tank, been set up and cycled for a couple of months. The ph from my tap is right at 7 and I just tested the tank to move some fish and I get a reading of around 7.4 +/-. Anyone know what causes that? (p.s. I've tested the tap after letting it sit overnight and still get a reading of 7). I tried a search, but it was too common....

Test the KH pf your tank and the water from the tap, if they are different, then something is adding alkalinity to the tank - substrate, rocks, or evaporation is concentrating the minerals already present.

There are some rocks that I got with this new set up that I suspect could be the problem. Or perhaps the evaporation, even though I only lose an inch or two of water (if that) over the course of a week. Will a difference of .4 in ph affect the fish when I do water changes? It is a 180g tank and I do about 20% or more once a week with a gravel vac. I'm assuming it would only change about .2 even if I did a 50% change, right?

Your fish should be fine. 7.4 is a decent reading. I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe just keep an eye and make sure it doesn't go too high. My pH reads around 7.8.

Thanks, but I'm not worried about the ph being at 7.4, I'm more worried because before I moved to this new tank it always tested 7, just like it does out of my tap. Now it is testing around 7.4 and the tap is still 7. I was just trying to figure out what might be causing this. Hopefully it will not keep going up, now I have my eye on it...
