I have 3 julii cories and a pair of platies in a 7g. I am having a really hard time getting the cories fed because the platies eat every speck of food dropped in the tank. I've tried lots of different strategies (feeding at night, soaking wafers, feeding on two sides of the tank, etc.), but nothing is really working. And I'm a little overstocked anyway.

So the platies are going back.

What else can I put in the tank? I'd like something colorful. I was thinking about a betta, but my filter puts out a lot of current and I don't think s/he would be happy with that.

You should try getting a bigger tank, because that tank is pretty overcrowded.Your corries need more room to search for food. I suggest you get a 20 gallon. That way your corries should be able to eat and it not overcrowded. In a 20 gallon you could get a dwarf gourami, or a painted glass, or a swordtail, or a fancy guppy or two. Don't get a betta because it will probably destroy the platies.

I would love to get a bigger tank, but that's not in the cards right now -- I'll be moving house in a few months and don't want to start up another until I get resettled.

And you should see my platies tear into the sinking wafers and pellets! I feed them up with tropical crisps first, then turn out the lights. Come back an hour later with the cories' algae wafers and the platys actually CATCH them before they hit the bottom and carry/juggle them around until they can eat them up.

Since you are returning the platies, I'd say just wait until you are in a position to get a bigger tank before adding anything. I agree those cories are overcrowded.
Once you Do have a bigger tank, there are lots of options.

Get the bigger tank when you move, and keep it as it is, doing a little extra work to make sure the corys get fed - perhaps catch the platys in a net for a few min to give some food a chance to get to the corys, etc... Once you move, get a bigger tank, use the substrate, etc. from your current one to do your cycle - just transfer substrate, filter media (yes, everything) and your new bigger tank will be fairly cycled for your current bioload. Then add new fish slowly so as to not cause a mini cylce.

my bettas love current. and my old betta tank, i had a bubbler, and he used to swim through it and get blown to the top of the tank. all bettas are different, and most bettas that i have seen and my old betta, and current one all loved current.

I know you said the platys would be returned anyway, but "catching them in a net" to let the corys eat is not a good idea. It would be extremely stressful for them and a PITA for you
