just wondering, if i do 25 or half changes like twice every week, instead of the once a week i'm doing now, if that will be ok? or what course of action would be better?

It's been really good with just the Betta and the ADF so far (1.5 months), but i added the shrimp b/c they're messy eaters (particularly the ADF) and i was hoping that he'd clean up the messy bits and make the water better overall for them.

I have a few fake plants in there and various shapes and sizes of gravel and a lid. I could probably get my hands on an eclipse 3 with a biowheel, but then i'd probably have to cycle it, right? I don't think anything would survive a cycling, maybe the betta? well... I'd really like to hear your opinion thanks!

Is this ok?

im gunna say get a filter it will help alot and since shrimp dont breath regular air your gunna need the filter to keep it well oxygenated or he will eventully sufficate. also you should have been doing at at least three water changes a week with no filter. fishys and frogs need clean water to be happy. i am glad to hear your keeping your betta in a 3gal. but i would definatly get a filter on it then you wont have to chage your water as much, i dont really now about the eclispe 3 bio wheel but i have red sea nano filters (deco art) and i love them they work wonderfully and there nice and small.

Just keep the ADF and Betta. Nothing else.

If you don’t want to get a filter then Id say daily or every other day 50-75% water changes. If you decide to get a filter then once every 3-5 days. But really what you want is a bigger tank. Get a 10g, toss a filter on it, move what ever deocr to keep it cycled and leave it like that. Everything will be a lot easier.

If you add a filter, and up your water changes for a couple of weeks (maybe 50% every other day), what you have in the tank should survive just fine. Adding a filter at this point will only make things better :clap: . Since the tank has been set up for a while, you probably have a decent amount of bacteria on the deco and in the gravel. And yes, a 10g would be nice, but what you have them in is just fine! I would not have went any smaller though.

i disagree, the shrimp would be fine in there. just make sure there are some hiding spots, in case the betta gets a lil aggressive.

plus shrimp create basically no bioload

I have Ghost Shrimp in with my Betta and they are fine together. Make sure there are hiding spots as the shrimp and ADF's like the cover. I don't think adding a few shrimp would hurt. Add the filter. You've pretty much already cycled, the bacteria will be on decor and gravel so don't worry about that. With a tank that small...
no filter=50% water changes daily
filter=once every 3-5 days/Possible even once a week.

if you get a filter (which, If I did that size over again, I would, it makes things easier, not just with water changes, but you can go on vacation easier, not worry about the tank when you got other stuff, etc...piece of mind, or is it peace of mind, I think I lost a piece of my mind.)...

so if you get a filter, you'll want something over the intake so the froggies don't get their little parts sucked in--no matter how low the flow, better be safe than sorry. There are bags made or you can rig something (I did both there, just get the bag).

good luck

Thank you all very much!

the shrimp was almost scampi for the first 10 minutes or so until the betta realized that it was too slow. Then it just hovered over it for another 10 minutes, like it did when the frog first came in the tank, I think it's a dominance I'm-the-king-of-this-tank syndrome, and then after that it left it alone. Sometimes, but only if it's feeding time, he'll meander over to the shrimp and make a swipe at him, but usually they just hang out.
