No problem at all. It will harbor beneficial bacteria in time. Treat it like filter media, rinse in tank change water when it needs cleaning.

It will not mess anything up chemically......but there are Sponge Pre-filters that Marineland sells for like 3 bucks, same idea.

they also sell special shaped sponge that fits around the power filter intake and is thick so it makes more bacteria. plus tiny tiny fry can hid in it, rarely, :idea2:

I kinda like the pantyhose idea, better. Its free!
sounds like it would work even better than the sponge for keeping the fry out.

Well actualy the pantyhose method is not good in that respect, the reason being is b/c there is still a strong current going into the pantyhose, and what can happen is the fry can get stuck to the pantyhose and not be able to swim free b/c of the suction, so what you will get is lots of dead fry sucked up against the pantyhose. With the sponge method the current is broken up greatly so the fry will not be sucked up against the sponge and be able to swim free if they feel a current.

Lower the current by reducing the flow from your filter and save money by using the pantyhose. LAlalala :p

What if you have to buy the pantyhose first :D
I like my sponge better. Its easier to clean, and is safer because there is not as much current running threw it

I tried pantyhose but they clogged way too quickly. I tried cheese cloth but they broke up easily and got sucked into the filter. I also cut an opening on a AC sponge and fit it onto the filter intake. It worked the best but water flow slowed down gradually over a few days. So, no matter what pre-filter you use, you need to clean them often. Keep an eye on the water flow.
