Go to www.aka.org Thats the website of the American Killie fish association. There isa a beginners guide there that expalins everything about killie fish. Good luck.
i would like to add some questions here...can i leave the fry in with the parents or do i have to seperate them ? i was hoping to not have to seperate them ..i want them to breed but i would much rather them all be in the same tank ...easy begginer killie fish am about ready to order and i know i want a plant egg layer ...and any other low light plant recomendations? i have read alot about them but am interested in prsonal opinion here...if i absolutly have to seperate them i will. if i use a small five ten hob filter with panty hose on the bottom do you think this method will sufice ...and how many would you start with in a five gallon mini bow that will only house the killis? sorry to hijack your thread but i was going to post and saw yours ..though maybe wed both get some answers...lol
I've had no problems up to this point with my killifish. I added rummy nose tetras, they aren't exactly small, much much bigger then any fry, and the killifish are eating them. The end of the tail is sticking out usually. They can't seem to control themselves, which is annoying to me as I didn't want rummy nose to become food, as I worked hard to keep the ones I had alive after the initial acclimation. So if you don't mind them snacking on whatever can fit in their mouths then they are alright, other wise you may want to think of another fish, which won't eat fry, though I think any fish whose mouth is big enough, will eat a fish that'll fit in it.
mine when not hunting hang out at the surface generally in one spot. They're really nice to look at, as mine have a shiny irridescence. They are also messy eaters when given flakes.
Another great place is www.thekillifishsource.com these guys have a lot of killi's and water parameters needed for each. Also try www.aquabid.com I've gotten some beautiful fish from there.
Do your home work first Ph, temperature, foods, water hardness etc. You may get into more than you bargained for.
I started with a tri of A.Lineatus, 2 of which died while trying to swallow my oto's and yes I did feed them live and frozen foods as well as flake, predatory instinct is my guess.
I now have a pair of A australe (orange form), pair of blue gularis, pair of Chromaphyosemion bitaeniatum Ijebu Ode and a pair of Paraphyosemion gardneri N'sukka.
I still consider myself new to the killi's but they have coloration beyond belief.
