Question about Mollies

We went to our local Petsmart last week to buy some Mollies. The girl who got us the fish, (bless her little heart), was very protective, and insisted that we had to get at least 3 of the same color Molly. I didn't think it mattered, as long as you got a group of the same species so they could school. So I thought I'd ask in here...does it really matter if they are all the same color? We got three beautiful black/white speckled mollies (dalmatian??) and they seem pretty happy and healthy. They are still in our QT. As you can probably tell, we are new at this hobby and not real sure what we're doing yet. I thought the orange mollies were pretty but I didn't want to get 3 black and then 3 more orange. (which is what the Petsmart girls insisted we had to do). Our display tank is only 29 g and I want to be careful not to overcrowd the fish.

That is wise not to over crowd your tank. :)
As for the mollies go, I really never had a problem per-se with them. They tended to be fine with mixed colors. Since most are the same species of fish but different colors. Imagine mollies being like Dogs. Dogs will mate with each other but they are still dogs, they just look different. Same goes with the Mollies, guppies, platies and swordtails, its all coloration. Yes there are different species out there, but most bought at petco and petsmart originated from the same species. So i would not worry, just think of your tank being color cordinated.

I had one black Molly and one white Molly, and when I got one more black and white one, they stuck together based on color... The black one stayed with the black one, the white one stayed with the white one...

Doesn't really bother me that four Mollies aren't schooling together, but I just find it weird.
