i have 80 watts on a 55 tank and i was wondering which plants i could put in that wouldnt turn brown. and which types are hardy. thanks.

Try any of the Anubias's. I first had them in my 90g with central american cichlids with less than 1w/g and the did fine.

I agree with Pike Lee on the Anubis also try java fern java moss and possibly some crypts.
I am having good luck with ludwigia and anacharis as well.

Add a Reflector and perhaps a nice bulb like a Triton.
That should help.
Adding CO2 can help a great deal also even at this level of lighting and DIY should do it.
It will increase the growth and the types of plants you can grow.
Perhaps 80% of the plants out there you can grow pretty well.
Dose fertilizer once a week should do it if you have a good substrate.
I had some very nice tanks with this amount of lighting etc and many nice plants.
