I have read in a number of places and in a magazine that it is safe to put a single male Betta in a community fresh water tank...mine is 10 gallon. I have two Zebra Dions, one neon tetra, one diamond tetra and one bright red tetra (can't remember name). The Betta has been living very peacefully with all the fish except the bright red Tetra...he flares up and chases the red tetra around every so often (couple times a day). Any thoughts?

it should be fine. the biggest worry is the tetras or danios nipping at the betta, especially the danios. but if thats not the case, the betta should be fine. as all the other fish are faster than it. i house a betta with tetrass before and never had a problem

Thanks...

With the combination of fish I have described and the size, would it be an unwise choice to add a Red Tailed Shark?

extremely unwise to add a RTBS in a tank that small with those kinds of fish, especially the betta. The shark will get to approximately 5 inches and is a very aggressive fish.

When I first brought my Betta, my tank had danios in it and danios sure did gave the betta hard time. They were very curious and kept nipping at it for awhile and lessen with time but didn't stop. It did worried me if they kept nipping at the betta, its fins would get frayed and have infection. But the danios died later on though so I wouldn't suggest to have danios with betta. Since I won't be buying any more danios while I'm having Betta. :joe: :troll:

I have personally tried 4 of my bettas in the community aquarium with peaceful non- fin nipping fish, and never had any luck. All my bettas like to live alone. They always terrorized the tank. Depends on the betta.

Just keep your eyes on things and be prepared to move it if needed.

teh RTBS shouldn't be in anything less than a 30 gallon. They get aggressive as they age and need a good sized territory.

I personally didn't have good luck with my betta in a community tank but I know lots of other people have so just to repeat what's been said already, just keep your eye on things and be ready to move him should he become distressed.

Frank the Betta was not at all happy in the tank with all the curious danios. The last straw was when he was resting on a leaf and one of the usd cats was sucking around and mistook Frank for another bit of leaf. I'm sure I heard that poor betta scream like a girl! LOL The next day Frank was very poorly so I took him out and ended up having to treat him for a parasite and a fungus. He now lives in small bowl with his giant rock and makes bubbles all day. :D
