i was thinking about switching out my substrate to course sand or fine sand for a planted 29 gal. but i don't know what kind of sand to buy or what type to use. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. a type that would not alter my ph too much and if it does please tell me how it would affect my water parameters. :look:

Pool filter sand. Its not too small, and looks good. Plus its cheep and wont affect the pH.

I have filter sand in my 37 gallon tank with no change to the water and playsand in my 10 gallon with no change to the water. Plants in both tanks are doing fine. Good luck!

i would suggest black eco complete sand becuse you are doing a planted tank the eco complete gives the plants nutrients and stuff. i plan on getting that for an amazon biotope i am going to do :D
I use the echo-complete for planted tanks ...and the plants love it. You could put some of that underneath a layer of white sand if you prefer the white look...I did that in a small planted 2 gallon tank I have for a betta...so far the plants look ok, but it's a recent change so I still need some time to find out how it works out....as far as what a pain it may be when I have to vac it....hopefully the sand will stay on top...lol...Here's some pics of that tank...

Its a nice effect, but overtime it may mix up. With gravel vacs and normal cleaning somethings going to move around.
