The jelly bean cichlids are usually the ones you see in stores that are dyed all different colours.
The blood parrot cichlids when juveniles are a black/gray colour and slowly turn orange to red in colour.
I work at a petsmart here in NC and we sell the blood parrots for about $8.49 Petsmart doesn't sell any fish that are artificially dyed or altered
It could take these guys close to 6 months or more to get their full colour red but it's not a sure fire thing that they'll turn red in that amount of time.
There's a store round the corner from me...an asian fish store that has a tank full of these guys all mature fish. They're about 8-9 inches and the colour of blood literally!!! Beautiful fish!!

Not all blood parrots turn bright red. Quite a few of them only get to a deep peach or orange. Some of them don't change color untill they are almost full grown. And they sometimes loose their bright color as they age as well. They are a geneticly manipulated fish and that alone makes them unpridictable for coloring and other traits. I think you take your chances when you buy an extremely small one.
